Anybody seen Extreme Cheapskates? It's amazing how cheap people can get. I understand some of their practices. But I don't think it's still healthy to go to a dumpster and eat stuff from it. It's not like the people on the show are poor. They don't do it for necessity anymore.

This is an extreme case you're talking about, but I've seen people being like you portrayed. Probably life has been tough with them, and when waters settle down, they still can't recover from the shock they've been through all their life, so they eventually remain the way they were just a few months ago...

There are misers out there, for sure. Eating from dumpsters doesn't sound very intelligent to me if there is a soup kitchen or charity place in the neighborhood that will provide decent, nutritious food. But then I guess I am missing the point. I am talking about people who are poor, and down and out.
As for those who are able to pay for proper food, it seems a disgrace that they won't take good care of themselves. I suppose some of the more extreme cases of cheapstakes must be suffering from certain mental disorders.
Why, if you are of sound mind, and have the means, would you deny yourself appropriate nutrition and personal care?

I love that TV show, it never ceases to amaze me how gross those people can be. To the point of eating and buying food that is past its expiration date or eating someone else's leftovers. No wonder most of them are single... That TV show somehow makes me feel much better about my self, lol. I could never be an extreme cheapskate because I suffer from OCD :p Just gross.

How I wish our cable provider would air that show, I would have loved to watch it. I'm not sure if being cheap is an addiction already or just being miserly, but that sure isn't normal! Being cheap has it's limits too! Money is meant to be spent and not kept.

I've met people from both wealthy and poor backgrounds that were incredibly tightfisted, giving the impression that they were total cheapskates. It seems to be more common in men, particularly of older generations. Perhaps because they lived through a time of great hardship, they always claim that 'money doesn't grow on trees'. And of course, it doesn't. But it's also not good to go through life with a scarcity mentality.

Eating from the dumpster is going too far. If your not homeless and eating from the dumpster, there's a deep rooted problem. All the savings and budgeting should be rewarded by a splurge every now and then. Not living beyond your means is practical. I think when someone is well off and just acting like there homeless is nuts tho.

It is one thing to be frugal and purchase things that are on sale, and another matter entirely to do things like dumpster dive for food. I have seen shows about people who dumpster dive for most of their food and it is definitely not a healthy habit to get into. There is a huge risk of food poisoning.

When I saw this title I just knew it about the show Extreme Cheapskates! I remember one episode when a husband wanted to take his wife for ice cream. So he took her to the ice cream man, asked for a bunch of free samples and then walked away!

Another guy on the show made is own water system in his house so he didn't have to pay for a water bill.

Strangely enough I've never seen not one cheapskate on that show go to the food pantry. Besides, i dont think i want them in a food pantry anyway unless they were truly poor. They know they have the means to get proper food, why take from those who dont just to save a buck? What are these people going to do with all that money? They wont spend any more than they have to. It would be nice if they would donate to charity or a good cause since at least some of them are well off. Unless of course they are too much of a cheapskate to do even that.

That definitely sounds like an extreme case. I can understand being cheap coming from necessity, but if you have money and you're still eating from a dumpster I would be worried!

I think usually behaviors like that aren't just rooted in money, though. Part of it I think could perhaps be anxiety and that's what causes those behaviors to almost "hoard" cash if that makes sense? I don't really know how to describe it but hopefully you get my point of view!

That is really extreme. If you have the money, use it. You really cannot take all your money to the grave. Save some, but spend some. Their health will suffer if they continue on doing that. But since it is a television reality show, is it scripted? I do hope it is. Because it shows a really weird way of saving money.

If they are addicted to being cheap, then I guess they really have a problem. If they just cannot spend money on a vital thing such as food, there has to be some deep issues within them. Maybe a childhood trauma of having no money. Or a trauma of losing everything.

I think there is a point when one goes from being cheap to being just mean and this seems to be one. Sometimes it is not that an individual is poor or unable, it's just that they worry that they will become or they do not like to spend. Yes, it can be classified as an addiction in my opinion.

Sometimes what is shown on a television reality show are all scripted so that they could come up with a good show that will look it is true. But in real life if you have the money why you will starve yourself to the comfort of eating the right healthy foods for your bodies. On the other hands there are other people who really do not had the means that is why they resort to that kind of eating lifestyle and we cannot blame them for doing such things because of the lack of money. I do not think we can call this kind of thing as being cheap and this is just the fact or reality of life.

Wow I would have never thought people would be so cheap as to eat from a dumpster! That's taking it way too far obviously. It's good to be cheap, but there's a healthy limit.

I haven't heard of it before, but from what I read here it seems like one of those made-up shows with extreme cases in it. Still, I'm aware that there are people out there who do this and they get really greedy and cheap, in order to save their precious money. I don't get it - money is for spending, why would one keep them?

Sometimes people want to save money and when a person just makes a minimum amount it can make them try and think to eat cheap or eat whatever is available to save which can at times make them get paranoid at times. I think these sorts of people would have a hard time being in a relationship as it can be ruined by this, and may find themselves being single which can cause more anxiety for them in the process. It can be sometimes due to stress or they may have had a rough childhood, which can still be in the brain and cause them to do this sort of thing, and think they will take the money to the grave.

I watched that and I feel like things were played up for the show.
Nothing wrong with being thrifty, but I don't think many people are actually like that unless they are on really hard times.
Even older folks I know who lived through hard times and are very cheap because they grew up in the depression or grew up in large poor families are not that cheap.

That's kind of extreme and I don't think anyone should resort to eating from dumpsters, especially if they have money available. Why is having your bank account filled up important if you barely eat throughout the day and you live under your means? There needs to be a balance in everything.

Funny I thought you were asking if you know anyone who is a cheap skate. You are talking about a show. It is kind of sad, but some people have to resort to such things. Stingy, cheap, or whatever usual it comes from as we know it lack of money and rationality. Wealth comes in many forms. Abundantly kind, cute, or intellectual. Great people, kind people come from a place of lack. They grow from those dumpsters if they want to. There thinking with all that they've got. Desperate acts. I can think of a few people who do this. I didn't get what I want so I'll do it this way or whatever. What defines a great person is how they handle things from the bottom, not from the top. If someone can be great at the bottom. I don't find making a fish bowl television show out of someone's destitute life creating a mockery for entertainment purposes a very kind thing to do.
