After reading an article from the National Headache Foundation about the relation of cocaine use and headaches, I was quite alarmed at how dangerous cocaine use can be on the brain.

There are over 21 million people in the world who currently use cocaine and after a study conducted by in Rome, Italy by the IRCCS it was found that 90 percent of the studies participants complained of head pain/ache after cocaine use. The most common types of headache reported were migraines with or without aura.

According to the study "it is not clear how cocaine contributes to headache, but the authors say they believe it likely creates an imbalance in the dopamine and serotonin systems, although cocaine also affects the cardiovascular system, and those effects could contribute as well". As this si very serious, cocaine use and headaches can possibly be a manifestation of a serious cerebrovascular condition or other central nervous system consequences of the drug's use.

This is really alarming information. If only those who use cocaine could be aware of this before venturing into it; hoping it would give them a change of heart from using.

    Thanks for sharing.

This reminded me of a ''friend'' I tried to reconnect with recently, he said he no longer used cocaine, but I call the BS. He says he suffers from headaches almost daily, so after reading this... it totally makes sense. And I am not only talking about the imbalances... cocaine can potentially have loads of awful stuff that are not even mean to be there, but are added in order to cut it and have more profit. I'd not risk it.

You guys are welcome for the information. I am glad it was of interest to you. Tremmie, I understand what you're saying because i too had a significant other/friend in the past who said he'd stopped using cocaine but every single day he got these terrible headaches. He likened it to Trigeminal Neuralgia but when we went to the ER once, the doctor looked at his nose and immediately asked him how long hed been using cocaine for. Of course he denied it and the doctor, because of what he'd told them could only come to the conclusion that it must be TN aka the suicide disease which produced extremely bad headaches. There is no cure for it and it stays for life. I say this because he now does not suffer from headaches anymore...why? because he stopped using cocaine. So you're probably right on that!

Hello, I haven't been able to find much information supporting it, but I have recently tried cocaine as a method of treatment for my headaches. small dosage, then a mild muscle relaxer (OTC where i live), and it ends the cycle within 20 minutes. I've successfully done this twice. It should not be mixed with other self medications like alcohol. Alcohol is almost always a trigger. I found this study of a man with a very similar case, except I can't see me developing a dependency since I don't really have addictive tendencies. However, those who suffer from migraines, cluster headaches, or occipital neuralgia as I do, will try anything to relieve the pain.

    any feedback is welcome.

@WileyCat i don't suffer from migraines...so i don't understand that amount of pain involved. you're right in saying not everyone could do what you're doing... due to the addictive nature of cocaine.

i am glad you're finding relief..just wish there were more natural ways :)

Interesting. I've never heard of using cocaine to treat headaches. My first thought was that it's not something I'd ever consider doing; but I suppose if my headaches were bad enough, and I wasn't getting relief from anything else, I'd probably be willing to try anything. Glad it's worked for you, @WileyCat. Thanks for the knowledge.

Thanks so much for your support, I wish there was a way to help with the pain. I realize this is a drug abuse forum and not headache forum. I am not using this as a treatment method, and wouldn’t recommend because you never know what is actually in street drugs. but I really wish there was more research.

Thank you. I don’t recommend it though. You never know what you get from the street, and this wouldn’t be my go to solution. I just wish there was more migraine research.

I used to get constant headaches when I was using. I knew it was from the coke. I’d get my fix and then instant headache. I’m sure it added to my horrible mood swings too. I am still getting the headaches from time to time, even after 9 months of sobriety.

I hope your headaches dissipate eventually, @peachydust. I think they will. Hang in there, my friend!

There are many Natural foods, herbs, methods and ways to relieve headaches. Also, it is well known that being dehydrated causes headaches. I'm not a Physician, but Cocaine would be one substance that I would avoid. I sense some concern from you -- as you are on this Forum Site. A good headache Specialist knows other ways... Be in Peace

    Here's the deal. Cocaine=swollen capillaries=headaches.
I am a recovering heroin addict.
I've been addicted to many things though cocaine being one even though its an awful drug.
I have injected so much cocaine many people wouldn't believe me. If I didn't mix it with heroin when I injected then headache instantly. Like hit plunger can't untie until headache subsides. That fast.
    Coke=head pain.
And my brother (half brother) developed cluster headaches from cocaine abuse and he is afraid of needeles. And never did as much as I did. Its even being cut now with stuff like cattle dewormer. No joke. In fact I think there's an article on this site about the dangers of cocaine use. If its not prescribed and pure(yes you can het it from a psychiatrist) you shouldn't be using it...

Dear Forum (In regard to headaches):
The concerns I feel are many after reading here in the Forum about Pain Management and some who are self-medicating for Headaches... I have found that Medicating Pain with Drugs (even Ibuprofen) doesn't work for very long. Our bodies soon begin to feel pain again, despite medication. Using Cocaine is not going to stop the Pain Loop that our bodies are in. It is very important to work to better your Health as you grow in knowledge. That means making your Body and Brain strong again. I'm older, and I work out! There are not very many people at the Gym who are my age group. I don't have the pain of Arthritis, because of working out. Ask yourself: What are the underlying causes of my Pain? Poor Diet? No Exercise? Too many Drugs? There are many many Natural Wholesome Remedies that were used by the Native Americans, and other cultures to fight Inflammation and Pain. There are exercise methods that fight pain and increase your body's tolerance to it: one is Yoga. I'm not a Natural Healing Specialist. But I have done research into using Natural Remedies, exercise and Foods to fight pain. In America, the Pharmaceutical companies paint a panacea that a "Pill" will cure your pain and whatever else ails you! Don't believe it! Of course there are some medications we must take for our body's and our mind's health and well-being. It is very important to realize that Drugs put us "in a Loop" as I call it!! For instance, I took antibiotics for infections for 27 years until I discovered that Concord Grape Juice was a natural antibiotic that completely stopped my infections. My pain and infection "Loop" ceased. But don't use this method just because I did. Each individual is different. You are called to make your Health better when your Body is CRYING OUT in pain! Investigate Natural Healing Remedies for Headaches. Begin to exercise. Drink lots and lots of water which can cure so much! Stay off of Pain Medications which keep you cycling with Pain. Go to a Yoga Class. Swim for peace and help with Joint Pain. And, by all means, give up Cocaine for Pain Management! I feel such Concern and Care for you all!

I don't believe cocaine for pain management was being condoned. It was mentioned (and not recommended) by that same person.
I said it caused pain. Others, who had no experience one way or the other were not condoning it nor any other type of drug use. Do you have a drug problem we can help you with? Or for that matter any type of problem you would like to share with us?
We are all about healing and doing so in the healthiest and most safe way possible.
Thank youbforbyour concern. I'm wondering why youbfeelbthe need to be concerned however. Take a look at some other posts no one one here is condoning illicit drug use. Or to go against sound medical advice. Where did younger your information from because im,sorry but This is not a group of people treating pain with cocaine.
This is a recovery forum. Would you care to share your story sir?

I thought this is a Forum for drug abuse -- and not to abuse the persons involved in it.

Edit- Would you care to share your story ma'am?...
I went and read a few posts after this and I am still at a loss as to why you believe we are trying to get relief through cocaine?
Im sorry about what happened to your husband but I Am,ileaning toward his anxiety attacks being due to long term incarceration. And the use of anti anxiety meds.
Short term incarceration 6 months of prison had me really jumpy. Then another 27 day stint in jail (they loaded me with klonopin) had me crawling out of my skin.
I now no longer suffer panic attacks since stopping the anti anxiety meds...go figure.
But I wanted to make clear that this site as far as I know does not condone drug use.

@Joyfull thank you for your input. i'm super glad to hear that you work out and that you're supportive of alternative methods for reducing pain. i agree that there are some things we can do to help the body, and pills ought to be last resort...

we can all agree no one is saying cocaine should be used to try to relieve pain. i think josh just wanted that to be clear.

appreciate your input. natural healing methods do help many people... and i'm glad has helped you so much.
