Despite the dangers of drinking straight liquor, there are some who still do it.

I know that drinking straight liquor can lead to alcohol poisoning. There was a story about 10 years ago about a man who died from alcohol poisoning drinking gin straight. I had a family member who died from drinking straight liquor all the time. I've still actually seen people drink liquor straight and not at all worried about the effects of it. Do you think this is a dangerous way to drink or not ?

Drinking alcohol straight or mixed can lead to alcohol poisoning. Diluting the drink with other ingredients doesn't decrease the alcohol content by that much, especially for binge drinking. If you're drinking a lot of alcohol, then drinking it in ANY WAY is dangerous. Straight liquor is obviously more dangerous to some degree, but it's not like mixed drinks make drinking that much safer anyways.

A co-worker of mine when his wife had left him, to numb the pain, drank a lot of whiskey and next thing he remembered is waking up in a hospital bed. As AFGATafcar says, consumption of a lot of alcohol over a short period of time could kill you. It doesn't really matter if it's straight liquor or not.

Consuming alcohol is a bet with one's life as anything might happen as a result of it. In many instances people take it in an attempt to rid themselves of pain or disappointment then end up becoming victims to it. I have seen a case of a man so overcome with grief after losing his wife that he took to the bottle daily. Only after he developed liver cirrhosis did he seek help for the problem.

I did a lot before... whiskey, tekila, vodka... I had a blackout when I tried those 3 the same night. Not cool at all. It's indeed dangerous. I no longer want to do such a thing. I still liquor when I prepare certain dishes or punch, but I never drink it straight anymore. Last year though... I did drank some hot chocolate with whiskey in it. I'm good :) I just don't over do it ;)

I don't know how people can do it because just the smell of it makes me feel sick. I know when you watch TV the actors are always portrayed as drinking alcohol straight. No matter if you drink it straight or you mix it, over consumption of alcohol will do a lot of damage to your body.

I do not see how anyone can drink liquor straight. I have tried it before and gag like it's no one's business. If I am going to have hard alcohol it has to be mixed with a soda or juice at the least. I do agree that it is the amount of alcohol you actually consume though regardless of what it is mixed with. If you drink more than your body can handle in any form, you are going to get sick and possibly die.

I do enjoy a straight shot every couple of months but I can leave it at one - I enjoy brandy for the taste rather than the way it makes me feel. So I guess, like everything in life, moderation is the key. It's no surprise that drinking straight spirits carries a higher risk of alcohol poisoning though.

That is the problem with addiction, even a person is aware of its dangers, they continue using it or consuming it. I also think that drinking too much one time or short period of time is really dangerous as there are examples of being dead or hospitalized because of doing that.

I hate how drinking booze "straight up" is seen as a tough or cool or macho thing.
There is nothing cool about getting your stomach pumped.

I actually think sometimes mixed drinks can cause more binge drinking than straight drinks. When drinks are mixed and just taste like a fruity soda or something, I feel like it can be more open to overdoing it or for things getting out of control quicker than you realize. It's almost the idea of if you can't taste the alcohol content you don't realize it exists.

That was my binge-drinking style to a T. Pounding straight shots was the one thing I never really did enjoy, so I’d rarely participate. Not only did I not find it any fun, I knew it could be super dangerous. But I was in no position to judge because I’d be the one overdoing it on the mixed drinks…

I can't drink it hard as that can cause problems and a person to be an addict or blackout which can be dangerous and also, need to think about the amounts you drink and have it with something like juice or water. It is important to be aware of the consequences and not let a person take alcohol straight, as it can cause problems for the ones who are close to them. I think that it is something that we need to be careful and also drink in a responsible way so we don't use alcohol as a way of getting away from things.

Drinking alcohol in general is not healthy. Drinking in it's more pure form (shots), is the quickest way to drunk. I use to do it a lot when there were friends around me that didn't like the taste of beer. So shots was the next beer thing I guess.

I've seen people get sent to hospital due to alcohol poisoning. So it's no laughing matter at all.

Oh of course many times, it helps you get drunk quicker, and lets you take it all at once and in one go. Really speeds up the process but yeah it isn't healthy and people get way to drunk this way.

Both the straight and diluted version of taking alcohol is poisonous. Especially for someone who takes a lot of alcohol. It's obvious that taking straight alcohol kills faster than the diluted one, but at the end of the day, it all ends up as poison to the body.

Both the consumed form and metabolised form of drinking alcohol, ethanal, are toxic to the body. It takes the liver a lot of effort to metabolise it further in order to make them non toxic. This process is very damaging for the liver and will result in long term damage, even death in serious cases. Despite all of this, people still drink alcohol, because it's socially accepted to do so. It's the same reason people smoke. If that social acceptance were to stop, so would a very large portion of the population.

When you are addicted to something, you just couldn't help yourself, and no matter how many times people have already said to you that it is dangerous, you would still do it, not only because you are stubborn, but because your sense has now been defeated by your cravings to alcohol.

It will always depend on how much alcohol you can handle. I, for example, like to drink on the rocks. I hate mixing my drinks with anything with sugar in it, but I have a limit where I just can't drink anymore and I just want to sleep. That means that my tolerance for alcohol it's at a non-lethal level because I don't get sick from it. But I do know some people who drink like there's no tomorrow. Those are the ones you usually have to drive home, carry them inside their house and lay them in bed facing down just in case.

That's kind of the problem here. I know for a fact that my parents don't enjoy smoking anymore (if they ever did) and they're now only doing it because their body tells them so, they don't do it out of enjoyment. It's a pretty bad thing when cravings take over your body and senses.
