Do you think addictions are caused for profit?

There are many addictions that can be exploited for profit. There are a lot of things that can trigger compulsive behavior especially in the media. Although there are so many addictions we could be programmed to have, I couldn't mention them all in this one post. There could be a definite link between companies making profit and people being addicted to what they sell. Not all things sold are harmful but what about the things that are, it makes you wander should you be on the look out for what society is pushing on you.

Although I understand the point you're trying to raise, but you seem to forget that human beings have a choice too. I don't want to be so conspiratorial about it. Not all companies intend to produce products with the intention of making people addicted to them. Businesses want profit, yes, but not to the extent of ruining people's lives. Only the mafia and drug cartels can be lumped in that category.

When my daughter worked at a call center for a major clothing retailer there were people who would call who were addicted to shopping. I know this is nothing like drugs or alcohol but it is still an addiction. The company knew who the addicts were and they would encourage the employees to up sell to these people because they would buy anything that they suggested. Say if the person was calling just to buy shoes before the call was over they would be buying shoes, pants, shirt, jacket and all the accessories. Running the bill from $40 to well over $400 before they were done. It is not like other addictions but it just show how companies profit from others addictions.

Yes, most businesses rely on an active consumer base. They don't like it when people decide to hold back on their spending as this results in minimized turnovers. That's why they are so eager to provide sales, loyalty cards, credit and freebies on a regular basis. They don't just want to satisfy their customers's needs, but get them to spend on things that they don't really need. Effectively turning them into shopping junkies.

I think it is a very real thing. Think about the fact that there used to be cocaine in Coca-Cola. Do you think they would have taken it out if they wouldn't have been found out? I personally do not think so. Big corporations don't care about the people, all they want is more money. It doesn't matter to them if it makes you sick, because then the medical industry makes money too. It's a win for everyone but the common person.

Well, everything that contains addictive ingredients is probably made by a company that's looking to profit. Think about cigarettes - people smoke it because they're addicted, not because they're necessarily looking forward to smoke one. They just make a profit from addicted people.

Addictions are what line the pockets of drug dealers with cash. Think about it - drug dealers would not be in business if it were not for addicts. People who are pushing you to buy are doing so for they're benefit, they want to make money. They do not care where you get the money from, or what you are willing to do to get it, as long as they get their money.

Of course there are companies profiting from it. But it's people's choice whether or not to consume the product. After all, no one shoves anything down their throat. It's true, they may seem appealing and are popular in the media, but one should also learn to differentiate between essence and appearance.

There are always going to be commercial companies pushing the issue when it comes to their products. There are so many temptations in this world. It'd be silly to blame the encouragements surrounding us, though. We make our own choices and are responsible for what we do in life. I can pity people that have an addiction, but at the end of the day they did make the choice to become that way. It's a long hard road and part of it is accepting that temptations are only temptations.

Companies if not all of them are more into profit than the benefits of their consumers. Just like those cigarette and alcohol beverages companies. There are even some alcohol commercials encouraging people to celebrate or drink in a daily basis.

I don't think that companies deliberately create addictions to reap profits. Though if the business owner has no ethics, he just might profit from people's addictions. Like for instance you have companies that sell cigarettes. Those hooked will be repeat customers. Then you have those wanting to get off of cigarettes. Companies can profit by creating programs or creating products such as patches.

I think that some hobbies we do may affect us and also we need to be careful as we could end up spending money on things which can cost us in the process as we can lose money, which can make the mind stressed out and should save the money for the important things. It is interesting to see what happens when people are addicted to something and the business makes money which can make the person use more money than they need to, and fruit drinks or takeaway foods can look appealing to us. I have seen many people get addicted to things which are advertised and sometimes a guy can see the women who is in the ad and decide to purchase the product or the item, and need to be careful as the eyes may want something.

A lot of times, yes. There are a lot of doctors that know that what they prescribe is bad and leads to addiction, but the pharmaceutical companies make a ton of money from it and often doctors get paid more based on how many they give out. Big pharma couldn't care less if people become addicts from their products, they make billions of dollars. The love of money is the root of all evil.

Not really. They are not caused, but rather they are exploited. Of course that there is demand of drugs, alcohol, tobacco and so on there will be sellers. Why wouldn't they be? Because it's not ethical? In the end, no alcohol manufacturer will make people buy their drinks. It's the people who choose to do it.

We are all aware that whatever is produced in the world, is actually produced to create profit and sell. However, all of us, humans, have a choice. We can make our own minds, in most cases, what we will buy, consume, use, etc. And which company we will choose to buy it from. There are a lot of companies that actually live off consumers, so it is in their agenda to make things as addictive to people as possible. Thus, they will sell more, and gain more profit. I doubt it goes to their favour to even think about the consequences they can cause to a human being, animal, or plants. It is all money and power.

Everything is done for profit. Nothing is accidental. If you do not realize that than you have to grow up but maybe it is better not to because you can get heart broken like The little Prince. Pharmaceutical companies create diseases to sell drugs that can cure them. It is the best possible way to earn money. It is not the most ethical but that is life. Imagine that you hold the monopoly on producing air. It is very similar. Even heroin was a drug firs but narcotic. made by Bayer industry from Leverkusen, Germany.

Yes, yes, and yes. Its a business that works like a money machine all around. Some people I've seen are slowly putting it together and some just deny it. Some people just don't get it. Which I guess they just aren't meant to.

Most people are addicted to social media especially Facebook but they do not know how to make money out of it. Some do spend a lot of money to chat with new friends not realising that somebody somewhere is making money. If you are addicted to social media then you can make money. You can make money through affiliate marketing and product marketing. You can also run advertising campaigns that are profitable.

In modern media and advertising, corporations have started to understand how to trigger people and get them hooked to concepts, rewards, notifications and so on, and they are exploiting it quite well, from mobile games to social media platforms you can observe the way they specifically designed so that you develop habitual behavior and keep coming back compulsively. If you do that, they profit. It's shady, but it's business

I think in this case it's a case to case basis depending on the person. If the person has an addictive personality then you can be sure that he will likely get addicted to a substance that catches his fancy, like cigarettes, alcohol, etc. And that results to added profit for those companies that make them.
