Most people don't know enough about addictions. They know drugs are bad for someone's health but in order to convince children to stop abusing drugs you'd need a lot more than that.

To help their children, parents shouldn't believe they know enough about addiction. They need to continually educate themselves so they can learn new, more effective ways to combat addictions.

The support of friends and parent are most important where the addiction of a substance is suspected. Children are especially vulnerable at these stages and rejection will only compound the problem. There is nothing like a good dose of tender loving care to make your child realize that your really understand and care about his problem and situation.

It's definitely a good idea to keep informed about these things - and also to not avoid talking about the subject. I think for many it is easier in the short term to just ignore the subject. It's really not an easy thing to talk about addiction with a 10 year old! You don't want to be putting ideas into their heads, or frightening them.

Being educated about things is the first step in having a good discussion with a child though.

A good resource for parents is the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids. Lots of great educational stuff at their website:

We should teach our children about the effects of addiction in life so that they can avoid all addictive substances. We as grownups, we should have learned about addiction when we were teens. It is also good to follow news about addictive substances so that we can educate the society about them.

That is right, being educated about the subject can help someone explain it more or better. Specially to kids who might have lots of questions. The proper approach or way of answering their questions will also matter.

I believe so. Parents should really educate themselves about drug addictions, and prevention, so they could be able to spread awareness about substance abuse to their children, and even to other people.
