Experience in a TC (Therapeutic Community?)

When I went to rehab, I didn't have any insurance or anything, and was placed into a Therapeutic Community with a lot of people who were court ordered to go to rehab. Not that this is a bad thing or anything, but I had a unique experience and I wanted to hear experiences from others who went to a TC.

My program seemed to be designed for people who were heavily addicted for a long time (ie decades) and was set up to teach basic living skills and discipline within a super structured environment. Everyday we would wake up at 6am, get dressed, eat breakfast, clean our rooms, come down at a precise time for count, do work therapy, etc. For everything, there was an exact time and doing things wrong resulted in punishments.

It was an intense and difficult experience. Many times I felt infantalized because of the strict structure/ punishment model. I'm kind of wondering what others thought of this model, and if it worked?
