I came across an Internet Addiction Test on Healthy Place . com So I did some searching and Internet addiction disorder (IAD) is not recognized as a real disorder by the American Psychiatric Association, yet many claim it is a very real addiction. I can see how it could be an addiction, if it is interfering with your daily life, work and relationships..family and or friendships that are non internet based. Then I would think yes, it may very well be an issue and or addiction.
I am curious what everyone elses's opinion is.
Do you feel that Internet Addiction Disorder is a real disorder?
Do you believe you or someone you know suffers from this disorder?

I don't think internet addiction is a disorder but one can be addicted to it. I'd say that those who deny this fact are but living in denial. Almost everyone is, to varying degrees addicted to the internet. One question that would prove this is: can you do without the internet?

Most people can't. They have friends on social media they must chat with everyday. They have sites they like to visit, etc, etc. Can they do without all of that? I think the internet has become a part of our life and cutting it out is not possible.

I don't think it's a disorder as well. However, if it just became really way too much, then I supposed it could fall under that. Anything can be something anyone could be addicted to anyway. I understand the Internet could be a black hole and just suck people's time and attention to. I guess if you can no longer live without it in a day to the point that your body is shaking and experiencing strange withdrawals, then that's when it becomes a real problem.

I do think that it is possible to get addicted to internet as it is possible to get addicted to anything.
I also think that there could be some that already has this addiction especially in this time that there are lots of things to do in the internet.

You can addicted to anything. I was once very addicted to the internet and was always playing online games but now I feel the need to go outside which helps get me off the internet.

Yes, it is a real disorder, but I think the line is not as clear cut as many other addictions because we all use the internet for one reason or another and if someone uses it for work or even if their online leisure is part of their work, which isn't too rare these days, then how could you really tell if the person is indeed addicted since the responsibilities he or she has are all online.

Just thinking about this gives me visions of the teenager who cannot sit in a school class keeping their focus of attention on the teacher, and they keep looking at their mobile phone to check their Facebook account or send instant messages. I think we all probably know at least someone like that. I often get teenagers bumping into me while walking down the road not taking any notice of what's going on around them and just staring down at their phone - obviously, if they had been crossing the road then they could have got run over and the fact that they were not aware of such dangers is obviously a big problem. I think at that point you may be able to call it addiction. Unfortunately, it's almost as though teenagers are becoming hypnotized by technology and as a result, they haven't got a clue what's going on around them in the real world.

I was going to say this. I don´t think internet addiction is a thing, but I think some online games have a continual sense of progression and reward that they become addicting. The games are perfectly designed to always have the next reward just a few moments away.

Personally, I wouldn't it say it's a disorder mainly because of one thing. Everyone who uses the internet does so for a certain reason. For instance, connecting with friends on social networks, watching videos or working on a freelance basis. This means that you may always find yourself online because of what you do or want to do. It's not really about an addiction to the internet but an addiction to what you do online. That's my opinion.

I think it's possible to get addicted to nearly anything. That said, it's not just teens, either. A woman once walked out in front of my car, because she was too busying looking at her phone while walking. Then, right behind her comes her little daughter, doing the exact same thing... never even looked up.

Internet Addiction can be a real and serious disorder if it's already affecting your daily activities. For example, you've been too engrossed in surfing the internet to the point that you have already forgotten that you have other responsibilities too, like doing your school works, cooking, cleaning the house, etc.

It's definitely getting worse. People having mobile technology on them, and being able to use it on the go, is causing them to become more wrapped up in themselves. That reminds me of another argument proposed recently - is modern technology breeding narcissism and causing society to become more narcissistic? Websites like Facebook and Youtube tend to encourage the "look at me" ideology.

It is a real addiction. When you have too much of it already, you know that you are addicted. However, let me amend. People aren't addicted to the Internet per se. They're addicted to the things they can do through the Internet. For instance, some people are addicted to chatting at Skype, MIRC or whatnot. Others to gaming. Other are addicted to watching dramas and movies online while others can't seem to let go of their Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr accounts.

I think internet addiction is a type of addiction, but probably not a specific disorder. It probably goes along with addictive personality. Not sure if that is a disorder, or just an issue some people struggle with. If someone is addicted to the internet, they probably would be likely to exchange that addiction for another addiction such as television or even books or other entertainment/distractions if internet was made unavailable to them. Internet in itself isn't going to cause something like a chemical dependency.

An addiction, I would agree, but a disorder, I do not agree, many people are addicted to the internet, because it has become a major source of communication, there are some things that one can not do without going through the internet, so it is something that people need in life, but there are those who have become addicted to it.

Internet Addiction is known as computer addiction, online addiction, or Internet addiction disorder (IAD).When you feel more comfortable with your online friends than your real ones, or you can’t stop yourself from playing games, gambling, or compulsively checking your smartphone, tablet, or other mobile device—even when it has negative consequences in your life—then you may be using the Internet too much.Parents who have let their children die while they played games hours on end, teens keeling over after day spent staring at a screen, or killing their parents after the object of desire was taken away. You might be right to suspect that there are other things at play in these episodes, but internet or gaming addiction may also be involved.Researchers quizzed 35 people between the ages of 14 and 21 about their Internet use and feelings about how it affected their lives.

Well, there is a difference between internet addiction and internet dependance. For example, people who got jobs in which they have to do researches, in which they have to make websites and such depend on internet in order to be productive.

But if you feel like you are glued to your PC and can't do anything else because of it, you should consider taking some time for yourself and try to reduce the PC time. It's for your own good.

I am addicted to the Internet simply because I use it for research and as a part time job. If I was not working online part time, my Internet usage would drastically decrease.

Some people are introverted and feel much more comfortable communicating with the outside world via the computer and there is nothing wrong with that as long as they still get out into the physical world from time to time.

Sometimes, people get addicted to the internet and can spend a lot of time on the net and just sit and eat food and have soft drinks over there and believe it is their friend and can gain weight by spending time on it too much. Sometimes watching videos can use a good amount of your time and wont know it has occured which is amazing and sometimes people can spend everyday on it. I try, and spend a few hours a day only as spending too much and not taking a break will make a person get tired easily as well spending time on the internet.

Junk food and the Internet seem to go hand in hand if you are not careful. Even when I am spending a lot of time online doing work, I make sure I only eat at my regular meal times. It is so easy for people to just stay couped up all day long and not exercise or eat properly. You have to plan breaks so that you can get up, stretch, and even go outside for a while.
