I'm pretty sure an addiction is just as much mental as physical. Scientist have proven that everything from drug to pornography addiction starts with activity in the brain. If you could rewire you brain somehow to not want what your addicted to anymore, could this heal you? Mind over matter might not just be a mantra but a key to breaking through barriers of addiction. What do you think?

I guess those people who go cold turkey are the ones who really define this 'mind over matter' idea. Maybe some people can actually make this happen. But when you are deep into addiction, it will be really hard to get out of it. You would need support so that you can remove the addicting substance from your life. That and of course your willingness to make a change.

The mind is the first tool to be able to beat addiction, because you must have the intent to quit in the first place before you can achieve anything. If a person can quit cold turkey, then good for him. However, old habits die hard for some people, so that's another setback in trying to quit cold turkey.

Addiction is totally a mind thing. Yes, there is physical aspects as well such as cold sweats, restless leg syndrome, etc. but most of it is in the persons head in my opinion. But, even if you are a strong willed person and have belief in yourself, once you are addicted it really takes a toll on your mind and in my opinion makes it a lot harder for someone to get it out of their head.

I would say a massive portion of it is mental. For me with drinking, I think maybe 10-20% of it was a physical addiction but the rest was mental. It was situations that made me want to drink, or dealing with certain emotions, over a physical pull towards drinking. I'm sure it's different for other drugs that may have more of a physical addictive component, or different for each individual though.

Very well said. Even the most influential people or powerful people can be addicted to something. Our country's president is known to be a cigarette smoker. He might be the most powerful person in our country, he is very strong willed but he also suffers from an addiction.

I do think mind over matter is everything when it comes to quitting, specially for alcoholic people who stops cold turkey only because their loved ones said so (I read about someone like that in this forum some days ago). I thought that man must really love his girlfriend... he must really loved her, because not many can quit cold turkey like that. You ought to have such a might and willpower... a great amount of that! Mind over matter!

I also think that it is possible to get rid of addiction through conditioning the mind or the mind over matter idea. My grandmother get rid of her smoking even she have been smoking more than 20 years of her life by simply deciding not to smoke anymore. So that it possible.
