Many addicts who have their sights set on beating their addictions may find themselves losing their footing if they neglect the important stuff which really matters. Overcoming an addiction is a process. Everything you do will either deliver success your way or cause you to fail. All you do, the better choices you make each day . . . these are the little things which count. Doing all you can to stay clean each day is what will bring you closer and closer to leaving the addiction in the past.
Most addicts that try to get sober fail, because they don't know what really is important in their lives. We all need inspiration. I have mine. But it's hard to keep it at the forefront of things. There is always some type of misguide individual that thinks it cool or funny to coerce you to use again. Best to just stay away and know what matters most in your life.
You are so correct. Recovery is like being a baby all over again and taking those baby steps each day at a time which bring you more into maturity and adulthood. I've learned that one should live one's life one day at a time and don't be too concerned about the many days ahead. We have absolutely no control over the variables around our lives. We are only in control of our thoughts and our hearts. So, my advice to all addicts is that they should live one day at a time and take those baby steps until they become giant steps.
Agree, OP. Many people fall prey to addiction in the first place because they lose sight of what's important and where their priorities should be. Life is tough but it becomes so much easier when you know what your values and your priorities are and then make sure you live in a way that honors and aligns with them.
I think a lot of addicts also fail because they have not fully commited to getting of the drugs and alcohol. You really have to commit to the fact that this is what you want. If you are not really commited to getting clean, the temptation to do drugs will still be there strong.
Besides losing sight or ignore what's important in their lives, they may also fail because they want to recover as quick as they got hooked up in addiction, and obviously this is not possible. In a different context, it's like those individuals who gain weight through the pass of the time, and then wanting to rid of if within a week by starting with a crazy weight-lose diet. With addiction is just the same; nobody gets addicted overnight, but going through different stages that involve increased frequency drinking or doing drugs, developing tolerance, increasing consumption, and get totally hooked up then. No magic detox and recovery treatment will help them to gain sobriety overnight either.
