I was thinking about this question all night last night. You might think of this question and silly and stupid. You might say it should never be illegal. But just think of how many people get killed from drink-driving. And that's not the worst. People get into arguements and fights all just because ot alchohol. Please tell me your answer to this question. :)

I think if alcohol wasn't so ingrained into the cultures of the world, it would be. If you really think about it, is it that much safer than other drugs that are illegal? I feel like it's probably as easy to overdose on alcohol as with cocaine. Alcohol causes destruction in a lot of people and communities. I guess the real question would be would how effect would making it illegal be in fixing these problems, which I bet it wouldn't really be. We all see how the legal status of drugs effects people's decisions to smoke marijuana (a lot of kids as young as 16 do it.) I think people would still find ways to drink if it was a black market item.

i think alcohol should be illegal because most people act out of character when they even a little ounce of alcohol in them

No. Not in my opinion, no. Alcohol, as I've explained in one of my recent posts, is not a hard drug because you can occasionally come back to it and stop whenever you want to. Most drinkers of alcohol are not dependent on it and have a need and strong desire for the feeling.

The better way to fight the abuse of alcohol is educating kids about what they should expect should they decide to be alcoholics. Attempts have been made in the past to make alcohol illegal but it only served to make things worse than they originally were. Educate the kids and hope for the best . . . that's what I'd suggest any time.

Making stuff illegal never really led to making it go away. Especially concerning alcohol. It might be more coherent (alcohol and tobacco are highly destructive, and yet they are completely legal, which is not the case of other arguably less harmful substances).

But prohibition worked nowhere, and people just make their own. I think keeping a strict law about drunk driving, drunk working, drunk anything, maybe, is useful, because when we act we affect others. But alcohol does not always lead to drunk, and to pretend it would is ridiculous.

Making alcohol illegal wouldn't make a difference. At the moment a lot of people crave those substances and by making them illegal chaos would ensue everywhere.
It's also a good tool to make money for the government.

I've answered this question multiple times with the same answer: No, alcohol shouldn't be illegal. Sure, it might be root of all evil for some, but that's happening only because they excessively consume it, not because the substance in its essence is bad. We shouldn't punish everyone for the mistakes of the few oblivious.

If alcohol was illegal then we would see more back alley deals to acquire it. Look at prohibition back in the 1920s. That didn't stop it from getting around. It just made the crime syndicate more organized. Til this day there is still people making moonshine illegally.

Just because something is made illegal, doesn't necessarily mean people will stop doing it. Alcohol is part of society now, wether people like it or not, and so more needs to be done to help people that are already addicted. Banning a substance can sometimes make it even more popular and people will resort to other ways to get it.

If it was illegal it would be the same as drugs. People who wanted it bad enough would still find it and there would still be the same problems from it. Making it illegal would not stop the consumption of it. I agree with pwarbi, banning sometimes makes people want it more.

I don't think it should be illegal. Like others have said, people will get it some way or another if they want it enough. That would just cause more issues.

I think we can all see how making things illegal that people will do anyway has worked out thus far. Do you think we have enough space in the already overpopulated prisons for people who are drinking alcohol as well be it it were illegal? Arresting people for health/addiction issues has not worked out yet so adding something else to the pile would only make it worse.

It shouldn't be illegal but it should definitely be more regulated. People get drunk at bars all the times and get right in their cars and drive home. I know the bartenders have certain rules to follow regarding that but do they actually think every single person who comes in the bar is being responsible? I definitely do not. Alcohol definitely is one of the top causes of death by car accidents and alcohol poisoning, plus a ton of other ways to die. It's ridiculous that it's so easy to get a hold of. I know it would take a lot for the government to ever make it illegal since liquor sales are a huge percentage of our countries' income. But c'mon and be honest. They could make so much more money by making weed legal. and there would be a lot less deaths.

It should be legal. Alcohol is dangerous only if overdosed. Also, the legal drinking age of 21 (18 in my country) is convenient. A little drink didn't hurt anybody.

I do not drink alcoholic drinks but I think it should not be illegal. Although I could see and knew lots of alcoholics here who are already problems of the society, I also knew people who drink occasionally and just enjoy drinking in moderation.

No it shouldn't. It would not make much of a difference and any who there are those who obey the drinking limits and drink responsibly. Its those who drink a lot that don't listen to the recommendations, hence the warning on the bottles and commercials, "Drink responsibly".

They tried that, it didn't really work very well.

I agree with you that alcohol is destroying many people’s lives but people tend to be more willing to do prohibited things even if law would force them not to drink. I think it should not be prohibited but must refrain people from drinking high quantities of alcohol every day. I think it would be great to put a reasonable limit based even on the age of an adult.

Alcohol has more harm than benefits. If you were a distributor then you can consider to continue with your business since that makes you money. If you are a mom with an addict son then you may wish that alcohol can be declared illegal. But there are people who have taken alcohol since they were young to their old age, but they have never been addicted to it. Some opt to taking a bottle of beer daily and others take whisky or gin depending on their budget or taste. I think alcohol should not be declared illegal. There are still many causes of death. Being overweight as a result of being addicted to certain foods will not make the foods to be banned from the shelves. What we need to do is to avoid the causes of addiction and stress or address the issue earlier.
