People should go to jail only if they have offended the society they are living in. But drug use doesn’t directly affect the society. But even if we assume that they have committed a crime of misleading and influencing other members of the society, is jail the place they should go?

    NEVER.

So, rehab is the best option because rehab is the place where drug takers are motivated to give up their use of drugs. Now, rehabs have their own way of guiding drug-takers out of the circle of drugs, but if some rehabs aren’t able to control drug users, then it is the fault of the rehab centres. In fact, such rehab centres should be closed down that are not serious about the gravity of their responsibility. However, the true rehab centres are playing their part and they have saved many lives, which jails have never been able to do.

One thing that must be noted is:

Jail is meant for punishment, but Rehab is meant for chastisement!

Jail is too much. Rehab gives a better environment for addicts to give up their addiction.

Jail and life imprisonment belongs to the drug-pushers --whoever they are who sell them in the streets and in the privacy of a medical clinic! They are the criminals that must be locked up. Drug-free rehabs, half-house communities belong to people struggling with drug-abuse who are potential for recovery, healing and new life.

Eh putting them in jail would only reinforce the negative thoughts they surely already have regarding to themselves and the world. I'd say force them to go to rehab. Ok, maybe not force them, more like tell them something like: you committed a minor crime, but instead of sending you to jail we will send you to a rebah center. That way those drug addicts who commit minor crimes can get help. I guess this would be a good idea.

I think it should depend on the crime. If somebody commitsa homicide while high off crack I think jail would be the best option. If they are caught with drugs on them and its a first offense, rehab might be the best option. I guess it's would be best ifbitbwas considered by the situation.

If a person wants to change for the best of society, allow them to prove themselves to you. Addicts deserve a second chance at a normal life so they should be sent to rehab instead of jail, as long they committed no crimes in obtaining their drugs.

Rehab is the most important thing for them. Yes, jail time can teach them a lesson but that time doesn't necessarily clean them of the addiction. Rehab is an opportunity for them to get their life back together and clean up the problems they have made. Rehab is such a better learning experience for those that are addicted. It truly is essential.

Locking a problem away will not fix it. It will infuriate and annoy them. You need to work with the problems. It is a slow process that needs support from family member. And not talking to there through a glass. A simple hug can make the worst day seem bearable. Rehab they have support systems, you don't have to worry about food and where you're next gonna shop. The focus is all on you and getting better. Pr

being left to rot in a prison cell will just destroy any positivity you have. This is an illness not a crime.

A new program in Gloucester, Massachusetts, started on June 1st. So far it's working, and other cities--including Boston--are looking at adopting it.

"A police chief in a New England town combating its drug epidemic through a unique program that allows drug users to turn over their drugs and get immediate treatment said Tuesday that there's been a strong early response."

All sorts of people go to jail, addicts and non addicts. Going to jail is determined by the crime that you commit. If it is a however, recognize through criminal investigation that an individual's actions criminally are due to drug addiction, then I believe that person should be sent to rehab. That person needs immediate attention and it should be top priority to ensure that that person gets detoxed and counseled. Afterward, if necessary, that the individual can then be sent to jail or prison.

There are some prisons that actually give rehabilitative help. I do believe that this would be the perfect condition for somebody who has done something very violent but at the same time needs help with their addiction.

Well, that is great to hear and definitely ideal for all drug addicts. They need help, but they also have to be disciplined.
