I recently read an article about the use of Smart Drugs going up. These are a class of drugs that are supposed to increase brain function. Does anyone have any experiences with this class of drugs? Are they addictive? Side Effects? Do they work?

I never heard about these kind of drugs, so I come here to see if someone has any answers to your question, because I'm quite interested in that. I'd like to hear the opinion of other people about these drugs and how harmfull or not harmfull they can be.

Nootropics (/noʊ.əˈtrɒpɨks/noh-ə-trop-iks), also referred to as smart drugs, memory enhancers, neuro enhancers, cognitive enhancers, and intelligence enhancers, are drugs, supplements, nutraceuticals, and functional foods that improve one or more aspects of mental function, such as working memory, motivation, andattention.[1][2] The word nootropic was coined in 1972 by the Romanian Dr. Corneliu E. Giurgea,[3][4] derived from the Greek words νους nous, or "mind," and τρέπειν trepein meaning to bend or turn.[5]

They'r starting to gain in popularity, especially amongst college students!

I personally don't know any kind of those drugs, but if they're good for brain and they don't have side effects, this should be a good enhancement for our lives, I would like to know more about this, especially about those who enhance the motivation.

I had never hears of these kinds of drugs either until I saw this thread. Everything's "smart" these days isn't it? Smartphones, Smartwatches, etc and now Smart drugs! lol. Smart drugs do sound very useful and if they can help us improve then that's a good thing. However, I doubt we really know enough about the long-term side effects of these drugs just yet.

I had never heard of smart drugs before, but did look at the article provided in this forum. Apparently, most smart drugs are the same drugs that are used for things such as ADHD. From my understanding, people can become addicted to these drugs and they can have harmful effects such as psychosis and cardiovascular problems. People can become very dependent on these types of drugs which is a concern.

Yes it is a concern. I don't know if the risks outweigh the benefit, if any.

I think the risks are more than the benefits. Are there really any benefits? If it is not being used for its prescribed purpose, I think that it is not beneficial. From what I have read, a lot of people have used them to stay awake for many hours. This is not good for anyone. We all need sleep and without it, it can be detrimental to our health. That makes the risks twofold.

How about this one for a smart drug (I hadn't thought of posting about this one before) - DMT: Dimethyltryptamine, also known as "the spirit molecule". According to the documentaries I have watched and the information I have read, even doctors and scientists have been researching this drug and experimenting with it by taking it themselves! Apparently, DMT is produced by our brain every day and is prevalent in life throughout Earth and is directly related to consciousness. They also believe that DMT could be the cause of out-of-body experiences and many people who have taken claimed their senses (sight, smell, etc) opened up into one form of perception that allowed them to perceive what cannot be perceived by the human body - some of them claim to have gone out into space and met alien beings and angels and experienced universal consciousness!

Here's a Vice article on DMT. I've never tried it, but I have done Ayahuasca. I think the two are probably on the same level of "wait....what just happened?"

Yeah I've heard of the one called Ayahuasca. I seen the show about it on TV. I think it was saying the person using it has to be a very skilled shaman or it will not be such a spiritual thing.

I'm not sure. I did the whole Peruvian adventure. People still had traumatizing experiences but they're prepared for that kind of thing and do a good job of controlling the crazy. Physically anyway. For the safety of the group. It was an odd time in my life, for sure.

Did it help with your spirituality? Or open up?

I can't say it helped with my spirituality because it was during my active addiction to heroin. I do look for ways to become more spiritual in recovery, but don't really have a desire to alter my mind in the process with anything. If that makes sense. It definitely has a way of flushing out your inner psychological demons, though. Like a purge.

So an equally horrifying and relieving ordeal.

Well that's what I was looking for. I really do need a deep catharsis. Just been meditating sometimes and trying to balance things out. Thanks for sharing.

No problem. I don't support any form of drug use, but that's my honest opinion (about ayahuasca).

I have heard of Ayahuasca too and I think you're right, they're both on that same level. DMT is supposed to be completely harmless (so they say) but I don't know about Ayahuasca. I have seen websites that offer free samples of DMT.
