I agree with doxymom on it is dangerous to mix the two but the clinic may stop his suboxone if they find out about the drinking and from what I gather if that happens from what it sounds like your brother's personality is, he will go back to heroin. He is using the alcohol to metabolize the suboxone quicker to achieve a similar effect to heroin which is why I think it will push him back to heroin if the clinic cuts him off.I really don't have any great advice as he seems very stubborn and in reality both scenarios are Russian roulette in his case, maybe get a social worker involved to go to the bar and lay it out for the bar owner, because to me if they did explain it and your brother did pass away after his daily mix of suboxone and alcohol the bar owner could be an accessory to murder and perhaps if they hear that from a social worker they will stop serving him alcohol. Again I don't have great advice here but I don't want him to go back to heroin...This is a very complex, tricky situation he and your family are in,however if you do inform the clinic I pray it works out the way you want it to.Everyone on this thread are very knowledgeable and caring individuals with the best of intentions I just think this situation is incredibly hard to give the correct advice on as no one here knows what your brother's response will really be so it's hard to know for sure what the correct move is. @Distraught Sister I pray whatever you decide work's out for the best, please keep us posted and take care of yourself

Yes by normal use I mean not drinking after it. Notice how he's not getting hammered? And how routine it all is? As a former heroin user turned suboxone abuser now away and back on track I can tell you he's not socialising. He's drinking to get high. The suboxone and alcohol are synergistic in that they create a more euphoric experience. If he were on suboxone alone then he would not feel anything and it would treat withdrawal. However, be aware that your brother is also now an alcoholic. And he will most definitely have bad withdrawals if he is forced to stop the subs and he will also have- depending on his level of dependency -alcohol withdrawals. And they are rough.
I know about those as well. He's really not in a good place right now.
But what he's doing is dangerous.

So you advise to just turn a blind eye of him potentially dying from complication in his 40s - he is 40 in February .

So what you are advocating is that we as a family just have to continue suffering his continuous reliance on all of us because he wants to get high everyday , we should just sit by as he totally loses his mind by drinking 5 pints of alcohol everyday with his Suboxone.

If i send this letter to his clinic im both looking out for him and also my mother - if i dont sent it im not looking out for any of them .

Im still thinking about ....i might put an ultimatum to him after explaining everything above to my mother and the rest of my family this week. You either stopped drinking alcohol with your treatment and get on with your life or i will tell the clinic of how you suboxone abuse is effecting everything at home.

I hope and pray it all works out and I apologize for the confusion, I was trying to figure out how to help while I was typing, personally I think getting a social worker involved maybe the way to go but ultimately that decision is yours but it may put the fear of God in the bar owner just to have a visit from them as the reality is the bar owner knows the situation and is WILLINGLY contributing to the problem for profit even though it is putting your brother's life in jeopardy

IMHO That is of a 9th grade education.

It really does sound like he is Manic + drugs that make it worse .?

Let me say , I never took opiates , except when hurt. Until I stopped drinking , Boy ! I'd take 2 perc 5's , Do Laundry , Rake the yard , more talkative ( 7 subjects at once ) My Wife , Step dad , Got to where they got annoyed .
That would wear off in 2-5 hours , I'd take more 10 mg & start again.
In a year I was taking any opiate I could get & could easily take 40+ pills a day (opiates).

So I've loved the energy , BIG Help with PME. :);):p:D, OK TMI .

Every time I took Coke , Meth , Adderall , They 'Completely Shut me down' I'd just want to be alone in my paranoia.
Alcohol made me hype as well , until it was 'blackout time ', The dressing up sounds like a Manic or an eccentric thing . I avoid that kind of attention.;).

I never took Sub's but my clinic offers them & My crazy Dr, Has offered , I'm at a level (or almost ) where I can switch from M-done to Sub's but I don't want to . 'For some reason

Also IMHO , the Booze is whats making him so bad ...yes he may be chatty for awhile after dosing (but after 9 years ?) I wonder if he takes more Sub;s than he should ( yes everybody is chemically different ) & BET ? He starts drinking when (of before ) the Sub's initial Rush wears off. ???

More "Opinions " may be on the way.

Please 'try ' not to see all people in Methadone Maintenance Program , as you see your brother.

Many are trying hard & also as I stated Mental and other life stresses make changes harder.

Is there a medicine that you take for diabetes , or blood pressure , cholesterol med's etc ? That you must take to be or feel normal ? It's the same to me ( As long as the person is not abusing their med's ).
    Again " My Opinion"

    Under Medical Rules .

His clinic can not discuss his treatment without his consent .
    But
Them reading about his decisions hopefully will stick in their minds .

Just wondering , how can he afford to go to a bar to drink but not have money for street drugs. Even back when I drank all I could afford was cheap Bourbon or Beer, I'd spend an avg of 20-$ 50 + at a Bar.

    He 's getting $ somewhere .

    Great reply True Concern .

Addiction , mental health , is a VERY dynamic with many variables that makes a every situation different .

I despise the words 'Rock Bottom' but He has to want to quit !

Some people like to be homeless & have' 0 ' responsibilities , once enabling stops , If it were my Son , I'd never give up on him. Tho it would be SUPER hard.
    Best wishes

I was slamming dope while listening to him rap about slamming dope.
Then I was getting clean when that came out. I always can only listen to that album while in a certain mood. Or otherwise it brings me back to the slim shady era...
