Also, do you support getting drugs from Canada, Mexico or other countries where they are less expensive?
Drugs are so expensive in this country because someone has to pay for the cost of research and development. It talks sooooo looooooong for drugs to be approved, and so much testing is required, and the drug companies have to pass the costs on. Sadly, with the perception that America is wealthy, we are forced to sholder the burden, and to pay accordingly. Many of these same drugs are sold for pennies on the dollar in foreign countries. Advertising adds a good chunk of change to the price as well
What I most hear is the cost for research. I don't necessarily believe it, though. For example, Provigil is not really new, yet the cost is approximately 200.00 for #30. Diabetics also pay heavily for insulin and diabetic-related supplies. I think it is mostly greed coupled with supply and demand, and very little in the way of research and competition. As far as drugs from Canada or Mexico, I would have look into their safety regulations and selectively choose based on the drug supplier's history.
It costs a pharmaceutical company, on average, ONE BILLION dollars to bring a new drug to market. This includes the research and development, clinical trials, etc. Designing a new drug, synthesizing it chemically, and then proving to the FDA that it is safe is not a trivial matter.
I can only make an educated guess. I say it is all about marketing. Also other countries have less strict requirements meaning that they may not be as good as the US version. I have been told to buy medicine made for the US in the US
Because medicine and our general health is big business to them. For them, we are just industry food. That's the blunt version of it once you get past all the "political" talk.
There are several generic drug stores in here and some brands if not all of those generic brands are also as effective of those branded ones. No need to import cheap drugs from other countries if you live here cause it is already available here.
Now that is one good question. Some of them are so high that its cheaper to just be sick. I gues this is why some are still sick. I just dont get it myself. I mean my father n law had a perscription that cost him 400 dollars. He is retired and low income.
The prices are too high for no good reason. I heard of a drug used to treat hepatitis which costs $1,000 a pill. Other drugs used to treat hepatitis cost $1,700 a dose. Is there a huge difference between these drugs and the more pricier ones? One would think that one works better than the other. But if the cheaper one gets the job done why would anyone buy the more expensive one? Because they'll think the pricier drug is better. It's those who buy the drugs and insurance companies who are responsible for all this. As long you are willing to pay a lot of money for something who wouldn't take the money? Pharmaceutical companies say they price the drugs thusly to finance research and develop new drugs and all that money must come from the pockets of Americans.
They are expensive because they require someone willing to do the research and development for it. Now there are some prescription drugs that are way too expensive, but that is most likely a case of someone wanting to make a large profit. Sometimes they may also be expensive so as to create a way of preventing people from abusing them. If a drug is too expensive for someone, maybe they will stop trying to use it.
It's one thing sayig that the R&D has to be paid for but surely this is all done before the drug is approved, meaning that there are no ongoing costs in this department. The real reson drugs cost so much is down to the greediness of Big Pharma.
Prescription drugs are so expensive because most are in demand. Many people have the same problems and for that reason they need the same medications. While many people need the same medications, the resource's/ingredients needed can be hard to get to make the medications too. There could also be many other reasons why prescribed medications are too expensive. but there are the main two reasons.
