Just answered this in another thread but Ill say it again. It was villified by the paper and pulp industry as a way to stomp Hemp from taking over the market, they spread rumous that black men were smoking weed and raping white women. Then the politicians saw it as a way to garner easy votes by saying they are against drugs and all that stupid hurrah that people eat up.
One factor nobody seems to have mentioned is that it's way too healthy for us, as opposed to alcohol or other hard drugs. Pharmaceutical companies make billions of dollars industries by selling us overpriced medicine, whereas in reality we could just use... marijuana, I guess.
Effects of smoking marijuana are more than when taking beer. One can never be mad by taking beer but he can by smoking Marijuana. That is why it is illegal to smoke marijuana in most countries. Marijuana also makes one to be lazy. Think about Jamaica where most people in colleges are girls, and those girls many want to be reggae musicians. Men there have resolved to smoking heavily, without work. Everybody there want to be a reggae musician than being a mechanic, farmer or even a teacher.
All true. Lobby groups repressenting alcohol and tobaco dont want the competition. There are of course the nanny state types. Moralists who want to tell people what to do with their lives (also lobbying politicians). Its wrong but it seems after colarado times are changeing
All very interesting reasoning, but I think it should still be illegal along with alcohol and tobacco. However, it should be allowed for medicinal purposes which according to research are showing simply fantastic results.
Exactly this. Even Alcohol and Tobacco should be more widely limited and harder to get. Instead of being thrust into our faces. I just fear when it sweeps across the USA and most states legalize it that they will push it just like tobacco and alcohol and start a new generation of addiction users. I can see the long term; however not many can - or if they can, they refuse to acknowledge it. But it should still be allowed for medicinal problems.
I guess it comes down to what it can make an individual do and what it is associated with. The law enforcers fear that it will make thugs or likely thugs more enhanced at is sort of a stimulant. The origins of weed date back to early Jamaican society where rastafarians used it recreationaly. The government there feared the rasta thinking and associated the drug to this and it was made illegal in that country. Only recently did the law change.
Real reason? Taxes. Money. Sub reasons? It's dangerous, addictive, can destroy lives. People just don't see it "Oh it's just pot" or "Just a little won't hurt." So many times, those sentences - so many times, bad endings.
Wikipedia says the reason it's banned the most is that hashish is made of cannabis seeds. What? I don't believe anything of that. I tend to be leaned saying that it's more because of the fact pharmaceutical companies are making underground threats to governments in order to not legalize marijuana. I really don't see any other reason it'd be banned. I'm not saying it's really healthy, as it's got its side effects, but I'm sure we could do something to make it acceptable.
Indeed. There's always pressure in the markets someplace to suppress some drug, somewhere, for some company. I wouldn't see Marijuana being any different - a krpytonite so to speak tobacco companies so they're probably silencing since they can't profit off it. Yet, anyways.
Cannabis is illegal due to a company called Dupont. In the early 20th century, this company created the product called nylon. The issue with the timing of this was the fact that hemp was a much more valuable and easier substance to use to make clothes from. Because the company did not want to make a loss on their invention, they were able to successfully campaign the negative effects of cannabis through lies and propaganda.
There are probably many reasons why marijuana is illegal, but I believe that there are some that are more important than others. Marijuana is known to be the gateway to other drugs and I have seen scenarios where people have used marijuana and later used other drugs. Another reason why marijuana is illegal is probably because it could be dangerous to people, for example, it someone is high on marijuana and that person drives for some insane reason it could be devastating to the person and to others around. I have also heard from people around me that when they first tried it they felt like they where going to die or that they could feel their hearth pounding so hard and then they said that they never wanted to feel the same thing again, but in reality they probably did it another couple times after their first. These are some of the reasons why I think that marijuana is illegal.
I think alcohol alters the mind more than weed does. Alcohol was in this light banned in the united states years ago. But for some reason this prohibition was lifted off alcohol. Marijuana has not seen the light of day though. Honestly, I have no reason to push for the ban on weed to be lifted. There are enough foreign chemicals we are pumping into our bodies. I have no kind words for anything that alters someone's perception of reality and that's exactly what marijuana does. With current noise being made however, I think the ban will soon be lifted in most parts of the world.
Marijuana has been legal for most of human history. It's not a recently discovered plant. Even Shakespeare had marijuana in his garden. Miarjuana has only been illegal for 1% of the time that it's been in use. It was legal when Ronald Reagan was a kid. I'm guessing politics is involved in it's illegalization.
I believe that lobbies are the ones who run the business of marijuana and if the governaments will make it legal a ton of other competitors will pop out of the crowd and their income will descrease significantly. Of course this would damage them and as they are quite powerful even in politics they won't let this happen anysoon.
I believe weed is illegal for two reasons: 1. It was generally frowned upon for a long time. 2. There is the issues of working out taxes. This is similar for other 'drugs' I suppose. Fortunately people are coming to their senses and realizing how much of a benefit marijuana can be if used correctly. When you can use the product outside of a medical prescription, we will truly have a better standard. It will need to be monitored, perhaps even limited. But the option to buy such a product should be there. Making such a thing illegal (or keeping it as such) is just silly. Many people use it to stay calm, or as an activity with friends. You don't die from it and it's your choice. My opinion.
Once the pot is legal, people will be like, ok we did that now cocaine is not that bad either let's legalize it...I think this whole legalising thing is drug lords doing...they want to spread among people that it's a debate so it can't be that harmful, that's what makes kids not scared to try it...
I've heard rumours that it's because the paper company's don't want people using hemp paper. The theory is that it will put them out of business and so they payed off the government. My theory is that it's because it's not perfectly regulated yet, and past voters decisions.
I can't possibly see how legalizing cannabis would make people automatically assume that cocaine is harmless and start using cocaine. Also, why would drug lords want drugs to be legal and regulated? Legalizing drugs would be detrimental to the cartels.
I've heard a lot of conspiracy theories regarding this but it's hard to know for sure. From personal experience, I can say that marijuana high lasts a lot longer than alcohol high and has more persistent side effects (for example lethargy). Back when I was doing drugs I used to smoke heavily throughout the day and I noticed that even on days when I didn't smoke at all, I would still feel high.
