What was your worst moment in rehab?
I think mine was my whole first day. No one sat me down and explained the rules to me. There were a million of them. You couldn't say certain words, curse, or applaud for others (you had to snap your fingers). You also couldn't offer someone who was crying a Kleenex. I learned all these rules by breaking them because I didn't know. So, my first day was spent being constantly yelled at by the staff for breaking rules that no one explained to me. It was only after around 4pm, when one of the nurses found me crying uncontrollably in my room that they finally explained everything to me.

I agree! The first day was the worst for me as well. Just being in a new environment that is regulated like that can be quite scary. I remember the facility being so cold upon entry which made me even more uncountable.

The prodding, questioning etc was extremely annoying for me. Seeing all these people waking around just have me so much anxiety because I feltlike they were much more far gone than I was. I later looked at it as a blessing for me going so soon before I irreparably became someone I am not.

I think the whole rules thing got to me too. There were literally like 100 rules and some were birthday impossible not to break. I never understood why they had so many but I guess that helps with discipline.

In all my first day sucked too but it got easier day by day

My experience never really got better. I consider it a totally wasted month of my life. I was constantly breaking rules that I didn't know about, being told I was feeling X when I really wasn't, and stuff like that. I left still addicted and traumatized on top of that!

I haven't gone to rehab but it sounds like it is a really difficult place for some. I guess if it is successful then you can be grateful for it. Some rehabs are no doubt better than others and if one doesn't work for you, trying another would be possibility I suppose. However, even the best rehab is probably no picnic so hopefully a good one is not hard to find.

I've only been to rehab once, but I agree that the first day is the hardest. I spent the whole time crying on my bed, lol. The rehab I went to was a therapeutic community (TC), and had a million rules as well, each of which came with an accompanying punishment if broken. Did you think the rules were a little intense/arbitrary? I wonder what the reasoning is behind so many rules.

I was once at rehab for 10 days and the worst experience that I had there was that while I was fighting headaches and drug cravings, I accidentally bumped into my therapist smoking weed at the facility. He even tried to coerce me into drugs and I had to report him. It turns out he had been selling drugs at very high rates at the rehab center for some time.

Worst thing about rehab is when you go there to try and get better, but that's not the case for everyone at the facility. Unfortunately some people are there because they are pressured/forced into it by family. You cannot make a change and get better unless it comes from you own desire to do so. Some people aren't even addicts, they are actually there to find new customers. This could be those who checked into the rehab or even the employees. You have to really research look into a rehab place because you commit, because when you relapse it's worse than when you were an addict in the first place.

My worst rehab experience was when I went to visit my younger brother in a rehab centre. He had been admitted there due to cannabis addiction and psychosis. I found him fighting another man twice bigger and then he was detained in a strongroom. I had gone to visit him with some packed food. I left him banging the walls. He was in a pitiful condition.

I imagine that rehab is a difficult place to be. It is probably easy to violate rules too if they are not explained to you. I think that it would be only slightly better than jail really, but at least you can have some freedoms and wear your own clothes. I don't think I would like to be there.

My first day in rehab was actually very pleasant the staff explained everything in a very clear pleasant and careing manner and made me feel very much at ease as did the residents. I disagree with the shouting roaring and screaming at people being admitted to rehab. Your dealing with very sick people. I couldn't imagine people being admitted to hospital being screamed at by the doctors. That said there was discipline which was nessecary and you pulled your weight or else go. But my worse day was family day that was the day I wasn't allowed to speak I had to sit and listen to how my addiction affected my family that day broke my heart I was actually shocked and astonished by what they said to me but it was a nessecary experience and one I hope never to have to repeat again

@Silentgirl... Welcome. I'm so sorry that you're struggling and scared. Please know that you are not alone. There are so many people in situations very similar to yours.

I'm wondering... Have you tried going to NA or SMART Recovery meetings? What about seeing an addition specialist? An addiction specialist could assess your case and recommend the best next steps for you. They have a very thorough knowledge of all aspects of addiction, so they know way more than "normal" doctors. I think that would be a great place for you to start. They may refer you to treatment or an intensive outpatient program.

You can overcome your addiction if you make the commitment and are willing to work hard. Will it be easy? Not likely. But I guarantee it will be worth it. And you don't have to do it alone. Not only is it okay to not be okay; it's also okay to ask for help. You are not a bad have a disease called addiction. So don't ever feel any shame or embarrassment.

I'm glad you reached out. I'm sending you lots of positive, clean & sober vibes, along with tons of encouragement and hope. You can do this. I know you can.

    Love and light to you.
