Your thoughts on Seroquel

As a substance abuse detox admission nurse, I'm increasingly frustrated by the growing popularity of Seroquel as an "insomnia" medication. Seroquel is an anti-psychotic with a whole host of side effects that should not be being prescribed for a sleep aid when there are far more milder options. Jesus, we give Seroquel to old ladies in the nursing home when they're throwing their poop and trying to climb out the window. This is not a medication to be taken lightly. I'm disappointed in doctors for giving in to patients and allowing this trend to keep increasing.

What's next? Haldol for cough suppressant?

    Any thoughts?

I agree, @sxarexrow. I think doctors too often try to use drugs meant to treat one thing for another purpose. Using an anti-psychotic as a sleep aid? Not the best idea, IMO.
